What causes hair loss?

hair_loss_healthContrary to popular belief, hair loss does not come about from excessive hat wearing or poor blood circulation to the scalp. The causes of hair loss have been studied by various doctors and scientists thoroughly and all of them have agreed in principle that such beliefs are nothing but myths, and that the actual causes that result in hair loss are health, stress and hormonal changes.

Health is one of the major contributors to hair loss. Hair growth can be affected to a major extent by the damage caused to the linings of the blood vessels. The linings of the blood vessels produce Nitric Oxide otherwise referred to as an endothelium-derived relaxing factor that majorly contributes to hair growth. Studies have also revealed that people that have heart related ailments or diabetes experience far greater hair loss than those people who do not have such diseases.

Stress is another major factor that contributes to hair loss. People usually start experiencing increased hair loss, about 3 months after undergoing the stressful phase of their careers. If you are one of those lucky individuals who manage to get rid of stress post this period, then it will take at least another 3 months for your hair growth to resume to normal levels. The reason for the body to react this way is because the built-in mechanism of the human body prioritizes the emotional issues as more important than the hair growth at that given point in time. This biological reaction pushes the hair growth to the resting phase otherwise known as Telogen Effluvium. Genetic hair loss is also simultaneously triggered by stress and in case you are already losing hair, stress will increase the rate of hair loss almost instantaneously.

Dihydrotestosterones or DHT that are male hormones are known to be the most common reasons for male pattern baldness. An enzyme in the name of 5-alpha reductase produces DHT from testosterone. Moreover, DHT is at least 10 times more potent than testosterone and can be balanced by medications. These medications are intended to open up the hair follicles from their resting phase and put them back on to the growth phase thereby resurrecting them all over again. Propecia is the most popular hair loss medication and can be brought over-the-counters or through online pharmacies.

Half of the American as well as desi population are suffering from some form of hair loss or the other. However, the good news is that this is not a permanent problem and there are a plethora of medications and treatments available to cure hair loss permanently. If your granny ever told you to grease your head with exotic hair oil, please do so by all means possible, it will greatly benefit you on the long term. Mamu surely know how greasy they get and we men’s sometimes cannot stand the aroma of the oil; think of it as medicine and perhaps you can trick your mind to use it. We will cover other remedies in the future article.
